A Secret Admirer

It was another Monday morning, and _____ was sure she was two seconds away from falling asleep at the kitchen table. She spent the entire weekend thinking about the three letters that arrived in her mailbox on Saturday morning.
    Love letters, to be specific.
None of them had an address written on them or a name, but each letter had its own charm that reminded her of three men she knew.
The first one was the easiest to figure out who it came from, based on the handwriting and style of the note. She was pretty sure it was from Mathias Kohler, a friend of hers. The two met back in college and regularly hung out together at a nearby coffee shop, and sometimes, they would go drinking together.
His handwriting was rather sloppy, and the letter itself was written on a cut out heart made from red construction. It was decorated with lace and glitter. She had to admit, the effort was very endearing, and it touched her heart to think that he would go through all of that trouble just to make her a special Valentine. However, what made everything more special was the letter itself. It read:

Dear Min skat,

I hope you are well on the day that you are receiving this.
I've been meaning to tell you this for a long time, but I really like you. A lot. You are one of the most kindest, funniest, girls I've ever met. You make my heart flutter, and sometimes I don't even know what to say. My mind goes blank, and I can feel my cheeks go hot. I get tongue tied just thinking about you.
Please, please, please think about being my Valentine this year. I'll take you wherever your heart desires and buy you whatever you'd like. I can make you the happiest girl in the world. Just say yes.

Jeg elsker dig, _____.

The second letter was a bit harder to figure out, but it wasn't entirely impossible. The German writing on the box of chocolate that came with the letter was a big clue.
The second letter came from Ludwig Beilschmidt, her childhood friend. The letter was written on a lovely stationary in a neat cursive font. It was sitting on top of the box of chocolate, and the whole thing was tied together with a big red bow. It was probably the prettiest letter and gift you'd received out of the three.
In a neat, cursive font, he wrote:

Dear _____,

This might seem strange considering we've known each other for years, and I know writing this to you in a letter is definitely not the best way to tell you, but I do not know how else I could tell you this without making a fool of myself by stumbling over my own words. There is no use beating around the bush, so I'll tel you outright:
I really like you. I've always had feelings for you since we were children.
I remember thinking to myself, "Wow, she's really pretty" when I saw you for the first time. We were just moving into the neighborhood. I was helping my father bring in boxes to the house when I saw you across the street; you were drawing flowers with chalk on the sidewalk. My father allowed me to take a break and encouraged me to go talk to you.
Gilbert made fun of me when I returned. He said I was blushing madly as we spoke.
But, I do not regret it. You are the most wonderful girl I've ever met, and I would love it if you were my Valentine this year.

The letter brought tears to her eyes as she recalled the day she met Ludwig. It was a hot summer day, and she was indeed drawing flowers with chalk. She remembered how the feel of the hot pavement as she laid on her stomach and drew a tulip.
Ah. Tulips. The third letter came with a bouquet of red tulips. The letter was written in a cute card with a picture of a bunny. In front of the bunny was a ring made of carrots, and there was a speech bubbly next to the bunny that said, "I got you a 10 carrot ring. Be my Valentine?"
She chuckled at the joke and figured out it probably came from Abel. The letter inside confirmed it when he mentioned his sister, Laura.
She met Abel through her junior high friend, Laura. The very first time she met Abel was at their house. She was at their house for Laura's birthday sleepover. Abel tried his best to avoid the group of giggling girl in his living room whereas his younger brother, Henry, joined the group of girls voluntarily.
At some point, they all played Marco Polo around the house. When it was _____'s turn, she wandered into Abel's room. Abel, of course, freaked out and began shouting at her. She opened her eyes and realized she was in his room. She profusely apologized and ran out with a red face. She had to admit, she found Abel pretty cute, and she even had a small crush on him during high school. He had a cool and mysterious aura that surrounded him.
    He wrote:

To: _____

This is not the most romantic way to do this, but I couldn't bring myself to do this face to face. Laura said that this would be the next best thing, so here it goes:
I like you. I've liked you for years now. I think I've liked you even longer, perhaps from the time you wandered into my room during Laura's party. I'll never forget the look on your face.
You make my heart beat rapidly every time I lay eyes on you and made me sick to my stomach. I couldn't explain what the feeling was for the longest time until that dumbass Antonio noticed it. I denied it at first, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized I wanted you to be mine.
_____, I would go to the ends of the world to make you happy. Please be my Valentine?

_____ didn't mind that the guys confessed to her through letters, but it was difficult to choose between the three men. They had all been so kind to her, and she loved them all very much. But did she really like them like that?
She groaned and rested her chin in her hand and looked out her window. She decided that she would make a decision by the end of the day. Valentines day was a week away, after all. She just hoped she wouldn't regret making a decision.
She finished her breakfast and got ready for work. By the end of the day, one man would become one man would become extremely happy.
Except it wouldn't be any of these three men.
***
_____ couldn't focus for the majority of the day. Her mind drifted back to the three letters. It was a good thing she was allowed to work at her own pace, and her supervisor understood that she was normally a hard worker.
She was relieved when she came back home, but she still hadn't made a decision. She sighed as she kicked off her shoes. She walked to her living room and plopped down on the couch.
The three letters sat on her coffee table. Each of them seemed to call to her and say, "Pick me! Pick me!" But, she couldn't bring herself to just choose one. If she chose one, the other three would be hurt.
"Damn. I can't avoid this forever. Maybe I should ask for some help... But who should I ask?" Her mind drifted over to her best friend, Vladimir. He had been friends with her since junior high, just like Laura, but they didn't become close until high school. Although he came off as a goofy and eccentric guy, he gave amazing advice, especially when it came to romance. "That's it! I'll ask--"
    Ding dong!

The doorbell rang. ______ stood up and walked over to the door, curious as to who would come to her house this late in the afternoon. She looked through the peep hole to check who was outside, but to her surprise, there was no one. She hesitated for a moment before cautiously opening the door.
She looked around. There was no one but the group of children playing tag down the street.
'Probably just some kid playing ding dong ditch or something,' she thought to herself as she rolled her eyes. She looked around once more. Then, she noticed the big white box at her doorstep.
"Huh?" She picked up the box and lifted the cover. Inside were multiple boxes and a piece of paper.

_____:
Meet me at the The Riverside at 7 PM on February 14. Please where these-- I picked them out for you. I hope you like them.
XOXO

She was pleasantly surprised yet alarmed by the message. What if it was a trick? And who would set up something like this?
Her mind drifted over to a couple of different people, like Francis. He seemed like the type to set up a surprise date, but she didn't think he would be serious about her. He only playfully flirted with her. He flirted with everyone.
It was also possible that Arthur was the one who sent this, but she hadn't spoken to him in months since he moved. Besides, if Arthur were back, she'd probably here about it from Alfred, Mathew, or Francis.
'I should probably check on him.'

"Hmm..." She closed the door and went to her room. She closed her bedroom door and placed the box on top of her bed. She opened it and pulled out the biggest box inside.
Inside of it was a red dress, and it was just her style.
"I guess I could try it on..." she muttered. And so she did. And the dress fit perfectly. The dress flattered her figure and was also very comfortable to wear. "Okay, that's pretty freaky. Who would know my size?"
Next, she pulled out the shoe box. Inside were a matching pair of red pumps, and just like the dress, when she tried them on, they fit perfectly. She went through the rest of the box and found some jewelery, makeup, and perfume.
She sucked in her breath. Who would go through the trouble of buying all this stuff? It all looked so expensive, not to mention tThe Riverside was a luxurious restaurant.
She quickly found her phone and began texting Vladimir.

_____:
I just got a package with a note that said to meet someone at The Riverside on Valentines day. The box is full of stuff... I even got a dress and shoes. They all fit perfectly, and in all honesty, it's freaking me out. Do you know who would pull a stunt like this? Should I got on Valentines day? I got three other letters, and I just don't know what to do! Please help me D:

She anxiously waited for a response from her friend, but, he wasn't replying fast enough. So, she decided to text Feliks instead. Knowing him, he'd at least reply quicker. If not, he'd be at her doorstep.
She sent him a text, and a couple of seconds later, she received a reply.

Feel-icks ;3 :
I'll be there in a few

_____:
I'll be waiting with snacks ;)

***
"That IS freaky, but, it's probably someone you know," Feliks said as he held up the red dress. "You said the other letters came from Mathias, Ludwig, and Abel, right? Would any of them send you something like this?"
"I don't think so, to be honest. Ludwig and Abel would probably wait for me to reply before they planned anything. Mathias would probably take me wherever I wanted to go if I said yes."
"Hmm... Who else are you close with?"
"Alfred, Gilbert, Francis, and Vladimir. However, Alfred and I already established that were more like siblings, and Gilbert doesn't seem like the type to plan a mystery romantic date," _____ replied.
"So that, like, leaves Francis and Vladdie, right?"
"Yup. Francis flirts with me, but you already know he flirts with everyone."
    "That leaves... Vlad?"
"I guess so..." She sighed. "But why would he want to take me out on a date?"
Feliks face palmed. "Why didn't I, like, remember this before? God, it's so obvious!"
    "Huh?"
He grabbed the (H/C) girl by the shoulder. "It's Vlad. Definitely Vlad. I should've known. You should've known. Haven't you noticed the way he acts around you?"
    "Acts around me?"
"Yeah, duh! You ever notice how read his face gets when he talks to you or how much more possessive he gets when other guys flirt with you, like Francis?"
She blinked. "People flirt with me? Why?"
"Because you're pretty and kind and funny! What's not to like about you? Who has stuck with you through thick and thin? Vlad's been with you every step of the way since junior high, starting with like, your first crush to your first break up. Hell, he was about to hex your ex boyfriend or whatever."
_____ furrowed her eyebrows. "Why hasn't he said anything before?"
"The signs were so obvious! Girl, you need to take a HINT!"
"... But Francis owns the Riverside ."
"Good point. I still don't think it's Francis. I think he would've asked you out in person. Besides, it could be just a coincidence."
    "So... What should I do?"
Feliks shrugged. "You do you. Pick whoever you think is best. Just give me a shout when you do, 'kay? I want all the juicy details of your date!"
She smiled. "Thank you so much. I guess I'll make a decision by tomorrow."
"Great!" He clasped his hands together. "Now, where are the snacks?"
***
Vladimir sent a reply back on Tuesday morning.

Vladdie \(^-^)/:
Sorry! I was busy last night. As for your predicament, I'm sorry. I honestly don't know who could've sent it, but I think you should go.

_____:
It's okay. I asked Feliks for some advice already. I decided I am going, but I'm still kind of wary...

Vladimir's stomach dropped. Maybe he should have asked directly or at least put his name on the note. He didn't mean to make her feel scared. Initially, he thought it would be a good idea, but now that he thought about it, sending a girl clothes in her exact size seemed kind of creepy.
But in his defense, he knew her sizes from the various shopping trips they went on together in high school with Feliks, Toris, and Elizabeta.
He shuddered at the memory of the brown haired Hungarian woman. He was glad he no longer was in contact with her.
    "Has she said anything yet?"
"Hmm?" Vladimir looked up from his phone at Dmitri. They were both on their lunch breaks.
"_____. Do you know if she'll show up?"
"Oh, yeah. I don't think she figured out it was me, but she did say she'd go, though she is wary."
"I'd be pretty scared to if a note came to me saying to go to a place without saying who it's from. What if it was a predator or a stalker?"
Vladimir cringed and chuckled sheepishly. "I really should've thought this through..."
"But I'm sure ______ will enjoy the date. You reserved a private table on the terrace, right? And Francis is helping you too."
"Yes. I just hope things go smoothly..."
***
"So, I decided that I'm going to go with 'Vlad'." _____ made air quotes, even though Feliks couldn't see her.
    "Yes! I knew it!"
"But, if I don't send you a by ten, call the police."
"Like, stop stressing out. It's Vlad. I just know it."
    "Are you sure?"
    "I'm sure!"
    "If you aren't," she warned.
"Yeah, yeah. You'll come back to haunt me and make sure I have a bad hair day everyday. Got it."
    "Good."
***
Valentines Day rolled around, and _____ returned from work. She had about two hours before she had to be at the restaurant, and it would only take her about half an hour to get there because of traffic. That left her with an hour and a half to get ready.
So, once she got home, she didn't waste any time. She hopped into the shower, dried and styled her hair, applied her makeup, and put on everything she got in the package that 'Vladimir' sent her.
She took a deep breath as she got into her car and started the engine. It would be an interesting night.
***
Meanwhile, Vladimir was already at the restaurant, and he was talking to Francis about some last minute details.
"Do you think the violin and candles are too much?"
"For _____, maybe, but I don't think she'd really mind. She appreciates gestures, big and small. A wonderful girl, no?" Francis asked with a smile.
    "Yes."
Francis chuckled as Vladimir shot him a look. "Don't worry. I do not like her that way."
Vladimir relaxed. "Good. I was a little worried there for a second. I'm glad there isn't much 'competition'." He laughed.
"I wouldn't say that. I heard she has quite a few admirers."
    "Oh?"
"Oui. I heard from Arthur who heard from Antonio who heard from Feliciano who heard from Elizabeta who heard from Felix that she got three love letters in the mail asking her to be their Valentine."
    "WHAT?"
***
_____ was sweating bullets. It was by some miracle that she hadn't sweat through the dress yet. She just hoped it wasn't obvious.
She took another deep breath before grabbing her purse and exiting her car.
She felt so small compared to grand restaurant, and although she appreciated that fact that someone would go through all the trouble to set up a date just for her, she was overwhelmed by that same fact. She didn't think she was anything too special. There were plenty of girls like her. Hell, there were girls prettier and smarter than her.
She opened the door and stepped inside. The red carpet matched her red dress and shoes.
    "_____," a familiar voice said.
"Francis!" She smiled. "It's so nice to see you. How have you been? And the business? I see it's as popular as ever," she said as she looked around.
He smiled back. "Bien, and you?"
    "Great, thank you for asking."
"Now, may I escort you to your table? Your date is waiting."
_____'s heart began racing. "Y-yes, thank you."
Francis held his hand out, and _____ graciously accepted it. He led her towards the back of the restaurant where the door to the outdoor seating area was located. A few people glanced in their direction as he led her to her table outside.
The cool February air washed over them as they stepped outside onto the terrace. The flowing river could be seen from it, and the other patrons seemed to be enjoying themselves.
Francis cleared his throat to catch _____'s attention. "May I present to you, your date! Vladimir Popescu!"
_____ had a feeling her date would be Vladimir after Felix guessed for her, but her eyes couldn't help but widened. Her heart began beating even faster when Vlad looked at her and smiled.
"_____," he said slowly. "You look lovely this evening."
"Th-thank you! Y-you do too!" She smiled back nervously.
"I'll leave you two love bird alone to decide what you'd like to eat. Just call me over when you are ready to order!" And with that, Francis left.
And awkward silence fell between Vladimir and _____. Normally, they would have tons to talk about, but it seemed that all their words disappeared.
"Oh! Let me pull out your chair so that you can sit," Vladimir said as he rushed to the other side of the table. He pulled out the chair, and ______ sat down. He pushed her seat closer to the table.
"Thank you, but you didn't have to do that, you know?"
"But I wanted to. You're my date, and that's what you're suppose to do," he said. He went back to his side of the table and sat across from her.
"I'm sure all of your past dates were charmed." _____ giggled. Vladimir blushed. "Thank you for everything, by the way... The dress, the shoes, the jewelry, the date... It's wonderful, and I'm sure it cost you a lot. I really appreciate it. No one has ever spoiled me this much."
"Really? That's a real shame. An amazing girl like you deserves an equally amazing date."
"Awe." _____ blushed. She never knew Vlad had a way with girls. A man with a violin approached the table. _____ looked up, and he began playing a piece. "Music too?"
    "Yes. Just for you."
    "You shouldn't have," _____ gushed.
"So, what would you like to eat? And don't worry about the prices."
"Are you sure? This place is rather expensive, and I--"
"Don't worry. I wouldn't have brought you here if I weren't willing to pay for it."
"Okay, then. If you say so."  _____ picked up a menu and scanned over the contents. She picked out an appetizer and an entree, and Vladimir did the same. They ordered different items so that they could share the food and try various foods the restaurant had to offer. Vladimir also ordered a bottle of wine.
Francis took their order and returned with the bottle of wine shortly after.
"So, what do you think?" Francis asked after he poured them both a glass of wine.
"Exquisite!" Vladimir said after trying some of the wine.
_____ took a sip of the wine. "This tastes amazing!"
"Only the best for the best." Francis winked before leaving.
"This place is amazing," _____ sighed. "Thanks again for taking me out this evening."
"It's nothing, really," Vlad reassured. Another silence settled between them, but this time, it was a comfortable silence. "Um... I have a question for you, if you do not mind me asking."
    "What is it?"
"I heard that you got... Three other letters in the mail. Love letters."
"Oh yeah. Those. I got them the Saturday before you left the package and note on my doorstep. They came from Mathias, Abel, and Ludwig."
    "You all are close, yes?"
"Yeah, but I kind of... Forgot to reply to them." _____ chuckled sheepishly. "I got distracted by your not and our date that I forgot to send them a reply. I feel kind of bad now."
"You can always reply to them later," he pointed out.
"But I think they were expecting a reply before."
"Oh. That actually is a bit of problem. I'm sure they'll understand."
"I hope so. They're good friends of mine."
    "Another question..."
"Are we playing twenty one questions now?" _____ asked jokingly. Vladimir flashed a small grin.
"We can if you want to."
"Okay, but we'll start after your question."
"Okay. Why did you agree to come? I'm sure you were frightened, even just slightly, when you received the anonymous note and a package."
"I was curious before, but to tell the truth, I asked Felix if he knew who it was. At first, he had no clue, but then he had the suspicion that it was you. He said you act weird around me."
"Was it that noticeable?" A blush tinted Vladimir's cheeks.
"Hmm... To me it really wasn't. I had no clue. Now, let's start the game. I want to start since you asked me questions first. Why did you ask me out on a date?"
"Because I like you and have feelings for you," Vladimir replied with ease. _____'s heart skipped a beat. "My turn! Are you enjoying this date so far?"
"Yes! How did you know all of my sizes?"
"You see, I still remember the shopping trips we went on in high school."
"The ones where Felix and Eliza dragged me to?"
"Those. You made me go along too since you didn't like shopping very much. I still remember that Felix would practically shove you into the fitting rooms to try on the clothes he and that Hungarian picked out for you."
    "Those trips were rather unpleasant."
"Agreed. Still, what if my size changed?"
"You don't look that different, or maybe it's just me. I just took a chance and hoped that it would fit."
    "And if it didn't?"
"I actually didn't think about that..." The both laughed.
The two exchanged more questions until the food arrived. They talked and ate their food. For dessert, they ordered some pastries to share.

"Now what would you like to do?" Vladimir asked. He held _____'s hand as they walked towards the parking lot.
"I don't know. Would you like to come over to my house? We could play some Dungeons and Dragons together?"
"Sure. I'll follow you home, since we both took our cars."
"Okay." They stopped in front of _____'s car. She looked up at him. "Vlad--"
He cut her off with a chaste kiss. He pulled away. "I'll see you in a bit."
_____ blushed and brought her fingers to her lips, where the kiss lingered. "I guess so."
Vladimir turned around and walked back to his car. ______ got in hers as Vladimir watched from his to make sure she was safe. Then, they turned on their cars and drove to _____'s house where an intense game of Dungeons and Dragons would ensue.
And this was just the start of their new relationship.

This is my entry for :iconechosdusk: contest!

I almost didn't finish it in time ^^; I've been working on it for a while, and it would've been a waste if I didn't submit it. However, I'm still not that satisfied with this. I feel like Romania is OOC in this. The ending was also kind of rushed, but I hope this is okay ^^;

It's fantastic - I love it... awe every part of it was adorable. But you didn't need to rush, the competition has another month left :)
Still, it's the first entry I've received so far and not only did you choose a different character but you covered all the right bases and it was really enjoyable.
Thank you so much!

... Dungeons and Dragons after a First Date... yeah that sounds like the kind of thing I'd do :D
